A REAL NEIGHBORHOOD
What does the name mean? Back in 1870, when Roslindale, Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury did not want to be part of Roxbury anymore, a resident noted it reminded him of the historic town of Roslin, Scotland, outside Edinburgh. THAT’S WHAT ROZZIE IS NAMED AFTER
Roslindale Square and the surrounding small streets are now a totally different place. More current, hipper, trendier and it showcases many small businesses that are not only easy to shop at but fun and intimate at the same time.
What can you find in “the square”? Gift store/art gallery/card shop with new treasures every week? YES! Delicious restaurants and tiny brick-lined alleys used to access outdoor seating? YES! I am simply amazed how charming and friendly Rozzi has gotten thanks in part to Boston’s MAIN STREETS program which has involved neighborhood businesses in their own evolution. As a real estate broker, I am out and about and always looking for new and interesting draws that I can tell my clients about why this is a great place to live.
FAVORITE THINGS TO DO
Sunday morning, I went to get my hair cut at CENTRE CUTS & SPA owned by Terry Fitzgerald WHICH IS OPEN ON SUNDAY! TO Fornax Bread Company, WHICH IS AROUND THE CORNER, BAKES THEIR BREADS ON SITE. LUCKY YOU. 27 Corinth Street Roslindale, MA 02131
Favorite thing : I am going to tell you a secret now about a restaurant named after a famous Italian movie star from the 1950’s. It seems to be on a street but not really. It’s tucked down a little alley lined with brick and interesting writings on the wall. As you round the corner you can see the only other access is from the opposite end, which is a driveway, alley, parking lot of sorts. Summer dining is amazing and a local sweet spot that gets well-attended all summer long. The food is delicious, the kitchen is hot, and it’s always crowded so you will have to call me for the name or go on a hunt to find the restaurant! That’s a fun weekend outing.
Speaking of restaurants, Birch Street Bistro shares the same patio area with this movie star restaurant, and I have enjoyed their outdoor dining on many occasions. They have a deck, tables around the deck and good service with a well-rounded menu. This is the place to meet a friend all summer and winter long. The bar inside is large and warm with booths and great fare no matter the weather.
Favorite thing: Last but not least, around the corner from the commuter rail station on Belgrade Ave. (Roslindale Village) and a few doors down from The Emerald Society building on Birch St. is Birch Street House & Garden. The best gift shop EVER. The windows are always showing new wares and the wood floor feels like a village shop.
